The Capital Region of the United States of America consists of the states of Maryland, Virginia and the capital, Washington D.C.
Within this blog post, I’ll share with you my step-by-step travel guide on what to see and explore in the Talbot County area of Maryland.
The Capital Region is a perfect location for a road trip across this unique part of the United States.
In this part of my road trip, I will cover my suggestions for Maryland and show how easy it is to connect all the regions.

Let’s explore the Talbot County area of Maryland!
Easton is a small quaint town located in Talbot County, Maryland. The drive from Washington D.C. makes this a perfect starting point for your road trip adventure across the Maryland part of the Capital Region road trip.
Park up your car and stay overnight at Tidewater Inn Hotel, Easton which is perfectly located within walking distance of everything in town.
Be sure to enjoy the rocking chairs located out on the porch in this idyllic old-school hotel setting.
My recommendation for a top dinner spot in Easton would be Legal Assets, which has an incredible selection of items on the menu. I would recommend the Duck ragu pasta dish which went down a treat.
If you have some extra time, be sure to stop off at the Academy Art Museum, Easton. Then stroll around the shopping district on Harrison, Dover, Washington and Goldsborough streets.
End the night by Grabbing an ice cream at the Storm and Daughters. I’d recommend trying the oat-flavoured ice cream which was rather interesting and unique and hit the spot perfectly.
Spend the next day exploring Talbot County’s portion of the Chesapeake Country, an All-American Road which offers a wonderful driving experience.
Drive to the towns of St. Michaels and Oxford, and visit the watermen’s village of Tilghman Island.
First, stop for breakfast at the delightful Crepes by the Bay in St. Michaels. I would recommend the more savoury offerings of crepes with egg and bacon which went down well with a hot mug of coffee.
Next, I would recommend visiting the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for a tour around the Maritime Museum with a local guide.
Discover the maritime history of the area as well as a large collection of boats on display and a lighthouse where a coastguard used to be stationed.
From here you can also head out to sea on a History & Folklore tour with St. Michaels Harbor Shuttle.
Enjoy a leisurely cruise around the harbour and check out some popular local spots like the filming location of the movie Wedding Crashers.
At the end of your boat tour, a good spot for lunch is Ava’s Pizzeria & Wine Bar. I would recommend going for meatballs which have a special secret recipe made by the owner’s mother and they were fantastic!
Park up the car for the night and go for a walk around St. Michaels along the main street, Talbot Street.
Here you will find Lyon Distilling Co, which is a popular spot for its locally distilled rum. I would highly recommend the delightful coconut one.
Close by you can find St. Michaels Winery which has a large selection of sweet red wines. They have small tastings for you to try as you wish.
And last but not least, head around the corner and you will find Eastern Shore Brewing, the oldest brewery on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. A perfect spot to end your tour with a flight of beers so you can try all the different selections of craft beer they have on tap. I liked the rather good IPA.
Drive to Bellevue to cross the Tred Avon River to Oxford by taking the Oxford- Bellevue Ferry. It’s a privately operated ferry service that has helped connect the community of Oxford by water. The ferry operation is believed to be the oldest privately operated ferry service in the US since 1836 and is a great way to save time whilst exploring Talbot County.
Across from the Robert Morris Inn is the Oxford Customs House, which is a tiny building on the right. After disembarking from the ferry, you can stop off and have a quick look inside.
For a great dinner, I would recommend Capsize. The outdoor decking offers great views of the water and a wonderful selection of local beers on tap. I would recommend going for the Korean-style shrimp tacos which went down a treat.
After dinner, head around the corner to see if the Scottish Highland Creamery is open, which is a great spot for dessert. The sundae was a good choice with the butterscotch ice cream.
Drive along The Strand Beach and head towards the Oxford Conservation Park which is a nice spot for a light walk.
On your way back, look out for the John Wesley Church & Nellie Brooks Leatherberry African American Museum, two spots worth checking out along the way.
For the last part of your road trip across Talbot County, Maryland, I would recommend driving through the watermen’s village of Tilghman Island.
First, you should stop off for breakfast. I can highly recommend Two if By Sea as the perfect spot on Tilghman Island for breakfast.
They do a wonderful American-style cooked breakfast with an added local twist as most of the items can be prepared with locally caught crab meat.
I went for the eggs benedict with crab meat on English muffins, and it was out of this world. The service was wonderful too, and it’s a great place to start your day.
Next, you should cross the Knapps Narrows Bridge and stop off to snap a picture at the Tilghman’s Pride Mural which is a local art installation to pay homage to a local crabbing boat.
Then, you can take a short walk in Tilghman Island’s Back Creek Community Park to the lookout area to enjoy incredible views of the surrounding coast.
Next, stop off at the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum, which has a unique “W” shape to the architectural design of the building. The Lee House is one of 13 unique designs built in 1890-1900 on Tilghman Island and in Sherwood. To this day, only seven have survived, and only two remain in their un-modernized condition. This is the first, and in all likelihood the only, that will be publicly accessible in near original condition.
Go for a walk around Dogwood Harbor to spot a few of the working crab boats. It also offers a great picture opportunity, especially if the boats are bringing back crab catch for the day.
For lunch, I would suggest Gallery, Saint Michaels to pick up a packed lunch to enjoy on the road.
Once you’ve visited Tilghman Island, you can easily cross the main bridge and drive towards Baltimore, Maryland to end your road trip adventure around the Capital Region.
